Once a character design has been settled on, the first step in getting that character into your Unity game is often sculpting the model. Probably the best tool around for creating these highly detailed sculpts is ZBrush. In this course, Game Character Sculpting in ZBrush, you’ll learn to use ZBrush to create the hero character from the Unity game, Swords and Shovels. Working from the ground up, you’ll start by creating the initial armature using a very flexible tool called ZSpheres. From there, you’ll learn to use several of ZBrush’s powerful sculpting brushes to edit the geometry at its base and to begin sculpting in all the character’s musculature and detail. Next, you’ll also learn to stylize your model and to create things like clothing and accessories by extracting geometry from existing shapes. [Read more…]

Building and detailing environments can be a time consuming process. To finish your models, you might need to create texture maps, either derived from photos, procedurally generated or hand painted. Adding higher resolution detail, like bricks or stone, to your interior and exterior models can be challenging as well. ZBrush can make this process a little bit easier. We’ll start by creating a seamless brick texture that we can apply to our geometry. We’ll look at using the Projection Master to quickly add detail to our models. We’ll use Noise to interactively dial in some specific patterns, like a knockdown wall texture. We’ll also look at building individual elements using primitive geometry that we can then append to our model. Once you’re done, you’ll have a better understanding of some of the tools you can use to detail your environments in ZBrush and a few ideas to get you going. [Read more…]

Learn how to create hair in 3D using Fibermesh and Maya Hairsystems. I will show you the basics, then go through a working example. You will learn how to generate Fibermesh, How to sculpt it with full control, and then we will export the Fibermesh as curves when we are finished. I am including a script that will take the different subtool layers exported as curves from Zbrush, and convert them to groups with Hairsystems and PFX hair strokes neatly organized in a click of a button. This is necessary when creating advanced hair with many different layers. I also go into how to light and shade the hair for a nice render. This is a great shortcut for anyone who is new to the CG Industry. [Read more…]

In this Intro to Zbrush course, students will learn better practices for workflows to movr a project from A to Z as well as learn how to use a combination of tools within Zbrush to easier create the work needed. We’ll investigate how quickly Qmesher can interactively, and on the fly, create proxy/stand-in meshes that will later lead to creating more complex meshes. With GoZ, students can use their particular 3D program to directly export/import their meshes to model with in conjunction with Zbrush to achieve better results. We’ll explore using the layers palette when adding in details as well as the deformeation palette for easy scaling and mirroring. Other key functionalities within Zbrush are the modify topology palette and, especially useful, the transpose action tools. Both have a great number of features to facilitate our workflow and help speed up the process of production. We’ll look to create separate elements in separate Ztools and then merge each mesh into one single scene for a final completed piece. [Read more…]

Many 3D artists, even character artists, are often intimidated by the totality of what is required to create a believable character, either reaslitic or stylistic. Even more steer clear of trying to create believable human faces. Bust Sculpting in Zbrush is designed to show how easily one can produce an acceptable model by breaking down the overall view into more ‘bite sized’ areas of focus to allow one to concentrate only on that singular are before moving onto another area of focus.

Zbrush has always been a great application for sculpting incredibly detailed organic shapes. But did you know that Zbrush has a number of useful tools that will help you to sculpt more hard surface shapes as well? In this course, we’ll talk about the Polish brushes, which will allow us to combine smooth curves and sharp edges in a single stroke. The strokes themselves have been enhanced with Backtrack, allowing us to get smoother, straighter lines when sculpting. We’ll also cover the Re-mesh functionality which will allow us to combine multiple shapes in Boolean-type operations. We can also take advantage of the Zbrush primitives to give us a great starting point for some of our hard surface shapes [Read more…]
