Application delivery controllers are a must have when it come to working with large amounts of content. Keith Barker’s new course, “F5 BIG-IP Local Traffic Manager,” covers how to use F5’s ADC technology. His 41-video course focus on topics such as startup configuration, dynamic load balancing, HA concepts, F5 support, and much more. This training also prepares learners to take the Certified F5 BIG-IP Administrator certification exams.

We caught up with Keith to get his thoughts on the course, and how you can get the most out of it!

Q: Why should companies train their IT professionals in this technology? What value does it bring?
Large content providers on the Internet use Application Delivery Controllers (ADCs, also commonly referred to as Load Balancers) to deliver content to users. The leading ADC vendor is F5 and their flagship product called BIG-IP. Companies need their IT staff to be skilled with the F5 products in order to install, manage, and troubleshoot them, in order to continuously deliver applications to users.

Q: From a student-perspective, what did you keep in mind when creating this course?
I wanted to make sure that each step in the course, including the downloads, installation, and configuration, could be replicated by each and every student who is watching the videos, in order for them to improve their skills due to hands-on practice.

Q: Any outside-of-the-box tips for students to get the most out of your course?
Mostly “in the box” tips, of taking the time to set up their own lab, and practice all of the techniques shown in the videos. Watching is great, doing is even better.

Q: What’s one real-world application someone can expect to use, thanks to this course?
Using an iApp, (as part of the BIG-IP system), the configuration for delivering an application, including virtual servers, pools, pool members, nodes and associated profiles could be deployed from a template in just a few minutes.

Q: What was your favorite Nugget to create?
I had lots of fun with most of them, and one that stands out is the IPv6 Client-side to IPv4 Server-side Nugget. It is soooo cool to be able to provide front-end access via IPv6, while still having IPv4 servers on the back end.

Q: What roadblocks did you come across when creating this training and how did you overcome them?
Didn’t have any significant challenges for this course. The F5 BIG-IP system actually does what it supposed to do, and behaved itself very well for every Nugget. One precautionary step I often use is to take a VMware snapshot of a VM (the F5 BIG-IP appliance in my lab) before a demonstration. This provides an opportunity to practice multiple times (or re-shoot a video multiple times if necessary) and revert back to the initial snapshot when needed.

Q: What’s the ONE thing you hope learners take away from this training?
Exposure to the concepts of, and hands-on practice with the F5 BIG-IP system, and specifically the Local Traffic Manager (LTM) module which is a primary method for performing the ADC functions on the F5. I want the learner to get the skills that will assist both the learner and their employer.
